Ground reality: Most working women face discomfort at professional spheres

Instead of focusing on the majority women who face some sort of discrimination, harassment, or bias in their lives, the men’s rights activist tried to victim blame anybody who dared come forward with an allegation

Apropos the article “Touch & tease terror in office,” published on February 23, I have not felt discomfort while dealing with a colleague to date. However, I certainly felt discomfort reading some opinions of an expert in this article.

Instead of focusing on the majority women who face some sort of discrimination, harassment, or bias in their lives, the men’s rights activist tried to victim blame anybody who dared come forward with an allegation. The figure is so staggering that a UN survey found 97 per cent women in the UK had faced some sort of violence in their lives. Instead of these, she talked about how easy it is for women.

She mentioned the case of a male doctor being falsely accused of harassment by a lady patient. Well, medical students are taught to have a female attendant around while examining a female patient.

Her opinion that any woman who brings into question her menstrual issues will end up having a downward spiral in her career is unprovoked, seeing how over 70 per cent women worldwide have undiagnosed polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and every one in 10 women in the world have endometriosis, which includes debilitating pain during menstruation as a symptom.

While it is important to acknowledge that men also face harassment, sexual assault and fake allegations, that is a separate conversation and does not have to be spoken about along with the legitimate power harassment most women face in the workforce.

Flop fair

Apropos the article “Footfall crisis at spring fair,” published on March 8, I haven’t visited the Hastashilpa, Tantbastra o Swarojgar Mela 2024 opposite Eco Park.

Firstly, we had had no idea that this fair was already on for some time. There were very few banners and little marketing done; I got to know about the fair from a YouTube video.

Secondly, it’s a completely new fair and running at the same time as Bidhannagar Mela (Utsav). So it was quite obvious that people would mostly go to the latter. Thirdly, the same sellers who have already come to other amazing fairs like Hasta Shipla Mela, Sabala and Saras Mela have returned again with collections that people have already seen and bought recently.

No wonder footfall at this fair is very less.
