Deb Kishore suffered serious injuries on his head.

A case of assault has been drawn up at Liluah police station following a complaint by Pathak, who was later admitted to a nursing home in Howrah.

"We were returning after attending a birthday party of my brother's friend in Liluah late on Saturday. Two youths stopped us near the Liluah bridge," Pintu Pathak, brother of the former councillor, told reporters in Howrah on Sunday.

"A few other youths joined the two after we were stopped and they suddenly attacked my brother."

Deb Kishore told the police the youths were residents of the area and they would often engage in unlawful activities under the Liluah bridge.

"We are feeling insecure after the attack and would urge the police commissioner of Howrah to arrange for adequate security for the family," a police officer quoted Deb Kishore as telling them.

Senior officers said they were gathering information about the youths who were involved in the alleged attack. "We hope to round them up soon," said an officer.
