A team of forensic officials went to the Baguiati hotel in northeast Kolkata where a guard was crushed to death when a fire panel on the roof came crashing on the security room on Monday night.

The team collected samples from the site of the incident where Chandra Sekhar Bera, 37, originally from Purba Medinipur district, remained trapped for several hours. A fire brigade team later brought out his body from under the debris.

The incident also left two other guards injured. They are undergoing treatment at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata. A doctor at the hospital said both were out of danger.

The forensic officials who visited the hotel on Tuesday afternoon said they didn’t find any traces of explosion caused by any chemical, ruling out the earlier version by fire officials who suspected an LPG cylinder had exploded.

“We are not ruling out an explosion from other causes,” said an official of the forensic department.

The police said the hotel would remain sealed till the investigation was over. Throughout the day, employees and hotel guests were seen leaving the compound with their belongings.

The police are also probing a stack of empty LPG cylinders, which some residents of the neighbourhood said the hotel authorities had tossed out of their compound before the police arrived.
