Pal and his family preserved the severed finger and came to Medica Superspecialty Hospital.

Akhilesh Agarwal, consultant, plastic surgery, said Pal had come to the hospital around 11.30pm and the surgery started within an hour.

“People meeting with such accidents must do a few things. Wash the severed part with water, keep it inside a polythene or plastic bag that is water impermeable and keep the bag on ice so it remains dry and cold,” said Agarwal.

“Also, put on pressure bandage on the part of the body from where the organ was severed. The bleeding will stop, though the pain will persist.”

Pal said he will undergo another surgery after eight weeks. “There is some pain in the affected portion of the arm, but I am able to work with the other four fingers,” he said.

Agarwal said people in such situations should always rush to hospital. The quicker they come, the better the outcome. The severed portion remains without blood circulation till it is reimplanted.
