Jadavpur University will hold the end-semester examinations offline across all faculties.
An emergency meeting of the university’s executive council was held on Monday night after the education department last Friday left it to the state universities to decide the mode of examinations.
“The engineering faculty held exams in offline mode in most of the papers so far. The science faculty has started offline exams from last week. The arts faculty will hold its end-semester exams, due to commence from Tuesday, in-person. The exams will be held offline in the remaining papers in engineering and science,” said Samantak Das, a JU pro vice-chancellor.
Rabindra Bharati University will also hold its end-semester examinations offline from Wednesday.
RBU vice-chancellor Sabyasachi Basu Raychaudhuri said the university’s executive council that met on Monday took the decision unanimously.
The university had previously decided to hold examinations physically.
But VC Raychaudhuri said they still thought of holding a meeting because the department asked the state universities to fix the mode of examinations, “considering the present situation”.
Friday’s notice came after the department told the VCs on April 27 they may consider taking suitable decisions by either switching to online classes or by advancing summer vacation or making suitable arrangements to combat prevailing weather conditions with effect from May 2.
Vidyasagar University that had resumed offline classes from May 5 following improvement in weather condition, on Sunday decided to hold the end-semester examination online reversing its decision of conducting offline examination.
VC Shibajipratim Basu said they reversed the decision after several students appealed for online examination.
Trinamul Congress Chhatra Parishad last week wrote to education minister Bratya Basu, advocating online exams.
Kalyani University, too, on Sunday opted for the online exams.
