Eco Park, one of the city's hotspots, offers a host of waterfront activities, including speedboat ride. These boats are powered by petrol engines.

There is another boat that is larger in size with a deck that offers visitors snacks and cruises around the water body for around 40 minutes.

The third is a double-decker boat that is powered by a conventional diesel engine.

Apart from this the park also has shikaras, paddle boats and kayaks.

A senior Hidco official said that the idea to introduce electric-powered boats was taken recently at a board meeting at Hidco.

Hidco is the custodian of the park and is also responsible for its maintenance.

Debashis Sen, the managing director of Hidco, said that they wanted to introduce electric power boats in Eco Park as they would help keep pollution levels in check.

“The electric engines are not only silent but they are less polluting. Since this park attracts a lot of birds and has its own ecosystem, we are trying to ensure that pollution level at the park is kept minimum,” Sen said.

The electric-powered boats will have standby petrol engines as backup in case of breakdown, a senior Hidco official said.

“More electric boats will be brought in. We are looking to fully convert the fleet at the park,” the official said.
