The state higher secondary council has decided to introduce data science and artificial intelligence as two new subjects in classes XI and XII from the 2023-24 academic session, said an official of the HS council.
Teachers would be provided training so they can teach these subjects, said Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya, president, state higher secondary council.
A notice signed by the council’s secretary Tapas Mukherjee, that was issued on Tuesday evening, says: “The council is going to introduce two subjects at the Class XI-XII level data science and artificial intelligence from the 2023-24 academic session. The syllabus and question pattern for these subjects is being attached with this notification.”
The council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has introduced two new subjects — Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) — in its affiliated schools at both ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) levels and some of the schools are working on logistics and infrastructure before they start the subjects.
The Telegraph had reported on May 15, 2022 that the Council For The Indian School Certificate Examinations had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with IIT Delhi that would help the council design a curriculum in “upcoming technologies, including robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and data science”.
The president of the state higher secondary council said: “Data science and artificial intelligence are two such subjects which dominate our everyday life. We have to teach these subjects from the school level so the students can develop a command at an early level.”
“We will provide teachers training so they can impart lessons properly,” he added.
Schools interested in introducing these two subjects must apply to the council between May 2 and June 30.
The council in its notice has listed the criteria that the interested schools would have to fulfil before they are allowed to introduce the subjects.
The conditions say the applicant schools must be teaching computer science equipped with proper laboratory facilities.
“The schools must have permanent approved teachers with the minimum qualification of BSc in computer science/BE or BTech in computer science/IT or MCA or honours graduate in physics, chemistry or mathematics with courses in artificial intelligence or data science. Candidates must have studied artificial intelligence, machine learning as part of undergraduate or postgraduate curriculum…..(mark sheet must reflect the same or relevant documentary evidence are to be produced)” says the council’s notice.
“The teachers should be familiar with Python programming language”.
