A city court on Monday turned down a plea by actor Vikram Chatterjee that he be given his passport back for a month so he could go to London for a shoot.

Vikram is accused in a rash driving case that left his actor friend, Sonika Singh Chauhan, dead in April 2017.

The police said Vikram, who is now out on bail, had made an application before the court in the first week of March seeking an order that his passport, which has been impounded, be returned to him so that he could go to the UK to take part in a shoot for a Tollywood movie.

Vikram’s lawyer Anirban Guha Thakurta said it was the fundamental right of a professional to lawfully pursue his career.

“We had submitted in our prayer that the passport would be returned to the court immediately after my client’s return to the city. It is his fundamental right to pursue his professional career.”

The prosecution objected to the prayer.

It said Vikram moving out of India before the trial could hamper the court proceedings and there was apprehension that he might not return to the country at all.

After considering the police report and hearing the arguments of both sides, the additional sessions judge of the sixth court, Alipore, rejected the prayer on Monday.
