“He had complained that on February 17, his cellphone had suddenly stopped working. He went to the telecom service provider’s store the next day and got a new SIM card only to find that there were transactions of Rs 13.3 lakh made from five of his credit cards,” said the officer.

The police launched an investigation based on the complaint.

The police team traced the locations where the transactions were carried out.

“We asked the complainant who he had met last and he told us about Thakurpukur residents Somnath Sarkar and his wife Ankita,” said the officer.

An investigating officer said the complainant had met the couple for some work at their rented accommodation in Thakurpukur. The couple are originally from Krishnanagar in Nadia.

The officer said the couple had cloned the complainant’s SIM card and copied his credit cards and made the transactions.
