“BEFORE PAINTING, you need to look at paintings.” CK Block-based art school Surekha held an exhibition of its students’ works recently and this is what one of the star artistes Subhomoy Pramanick had to say.

“I’ve been learning here since I was in Class II and last year I completed my MSc but I continue painting and try to participate in and visit as many exhibitions as possible. This is where we get new ideas and inspirations from,” said the Sector V resident.

Subhomoy had submitted an oil painting of a scenery that also used sand and glue for effect. He had also created what he imagined would be the scene during the pandemic at a railway station.

There were a total of 165 paintings of varied themes. Sayan Pal had created a portrait of his cousin in oil, Nila Sarkar drew Lata Mangeshkar, Lakshmi Rani Basak had made an embroidery of the fictional character Mr Bean, others had made Radha-Krishna, Durga, sceneries….

“Not all students are children,” said founder of the school Saswati Ganguli. “I myself started learning art after my children were born and I encourage others to do to the same. There are several homemakers who come to learn how to paint here. I also go over to teach in places like New Town, where I have several students."

The school was started in 2010 and has been holding exhibitions for five years now. They teach also oil, acrylic, fabric painting, water colours, pastel, pencil shading and glass painting. The school takes in students above the age of three but for the show those above five had contributed. Teachers had put up their works too, all over a room and the driveway of the house.

The exhibition drew visitors who were friends and family of students as well as well-wishers. “I don’t paint but I appreciate art so I made it a point to come over,” said Srotaswini Bhowmick of DB Block, who was taking a look around.
