Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of Calcutta High Court on Friday issued an order asking the Barrackpore regional transport officer, Pradip Majumdar, to prepare a list of illegal autorickshaws plying in Barrackpore town.
In the same order, the judge directed Barrackpore police commissioner Alok Rajoria to convene a meeting of senior officers where Majumdar would be present.
“Majumdar will submit a list of illegal autorickshaws and the commissioner will take all possible measures to find the drivers of the said vehicles and take penal action against them,” Justice Gangopadhyay said.
The judge had summoned regional transport officer Majumdar to his court following a petition seeking an order to police to stop “hooliganism” by auto drivers in Barrackpore, in North 24-Parganas.
Majumdar submitted before the judge that till date he had traced 32 autorickshaws plying without permission from the administration.
“Five of these autorickshaws have already obtained permission and the others have applied for permission,” Majumdar said.
The judge asked Majumdar to first find out the whereabouts of the autorickshaw drivers who have applied but have not yet been given permission and hand their names and addresses to the police.
