Chief Justice Sivagnanam asked the petitioner of the PIL to add the Singh’s widow as a party to the case and fixed the matter for hearing on December 1.

The bench sought an affidavit from the widow reflecting her demand.

Singh, 42, a resident of 58B, Patuatola Lane, had been called to Amherst Street police station on November 15, reportedly to return the allegedly stolen mobile phone.

Singh went to the police station around 5.45pm. Some time later, his relatives went to the police station looking for him and found him unconscious on the floor.

He was declared dead at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital.

His family lodged a complaint alleging he had been tortured to death.

A PIL was filed in Calcutta High Court accusing the police of custodial death.

Singh is survived by his wife and three children.
