A private bus ran a red light, rammed into a car and a bike before hitting the median divider at the College More in Sector V, before turning on its side on Monday morning.

The rider and the pillion rider of the two-wheeler were wearing helmets and did not suffer injuries, an officer of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate’s traffic wing said.

The occupants of the car, too, escaped unhurt because the airbags were deployed upon impact, the officer said.

But at least 10 passengers who were travelling in the bus suffered injuries, the officer said.

The bus, of route KB 16, plies from the bus terminus near the Sukhobrishti Housing Complex in New Town’s Action Area III to Bangur Avenue off VIP Road.

On Monday, the bus was headed towards the Salt Lake Bypass from Godrej Waterside Waterside.

The driver of the bus did not stop after the traffic light at the College More intersection turned red on the flank of the road that leads to the Karunamoyee crossing from Sector V.

The College More is a four-point crossing.

The bus hit the car and the bike were on another exit route from the four-point crossing, said the officer.

“The traffic light on the road that leads from the New Town-end to the Nicco Park crossing was green and the car and bike were plying on it. The driver of the bus jumped the red signal and hit them before crashing into the median divider of the road and turning over on its side,” said the officer.

There were around 30 passengers in the bus who were flung against the handles, roads and the front ends of the seats.

“At least 10 passengers in the bus were injured. We took them to the Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital,” said the officer.

A doctor who treated the passengers said most had suffered cuts and bruises. At least three had suffered deep cuts and fractures as a result of hitting the edges of seats and rods inside the bus, the doctor said.

The driver of the bus has been arrested and charged with several sections of the IPC, including 279 (rash driving).

Traffic at the College More intersection was affected for at least 40 minutes on Monday morning as the police removed the bus with the help of cranes.
