The body of a 39-year-old man was found lying in a pool of blood outside the Royal Bengal Room in Salt Lake's City Centre on Sunday afternoon.
Security guards of the mall were alerted by a loud noise and after they rushed towards its source they found a man lying in a pool of blood.
The man, later identified as Chandan Mondal, a resident of Howrah, was immediately taken to the Salt Lake Sub-divisional Hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said.
Mondal who worked for an event management company had called up his wife Priyanka Biswas Mondal and reportedly told her that he was unable to cope with the “pressure” and that he did not want to live anymore.
“On the call, I pleaded with him to come home as soon as possible. However minutes later he sent me a text message saying that he had had enough of this world and that he wanted to end everything,” Priyanka said on Sunday.
Priyanka kept calling her husband but the calls went unanswered. Sometime later a police officer called her and asked her to come to the Salt Lake Sub-divisional Hospital.
“He was out on work and was overseeing an event at the third-floor banquet hall. The cops told us to come to the hospital. We came to know about his death after we came here. He would not have jumped or fallen on his own,” Priyanka said.
Mondal’s other family members, however, said that he had been suffering from depression.
“He was also facing a difficult time at work,” said the family member who did not wish to be named.
A senior officer of the Bidhannnagar Commissionerate said that they had started a case of unnatural death and that the body had been sent for postmortem.
“We have started a case of unnatural death. A post-mortem has been carried out to ascertain the exact cause of his death. We have also spoken to others who were present at the banquet hall as well as the security guards who had
rushed to his rescue,” said the officer.
According to the officer, a preliminary investigation did not indicate any foul play.
