Police suspect increasing debts and financial crisis drove Shyamalendu Dey to suicide.

Dey, 50, was found hanging from the ceiling of his room and when taken to hospital, was declared dead.

The police said he was alone at home while three of his roommates, including his brother, had gone to their hometown in Nabadwip in Nadia district on Saturday.

“Preliminary inquiry suggests that the deceased was undergoing a financial crisis. We did not find any suicide note on him,” said an officer of Gariahat police station.

An officer said they were in process of examining the family members of the deceased to the exact cause of suicide.

The body has been sent for post mortem.

Dey used to visit his home town once a month. The last time he spoke to his brother was on Monday morning.

“According to their routine, his brother was to return to Ballygunge today. But Dey had called brother early this morning and asked him to come a little late,” said a police officer.

The cops said they received information about the man locked inside the room around 10am on Monday.

On rushing to the spot, the door to the room on the ground floor of a building at 19, Ballygunge Garden Road, had to be broken.
