There are 41 ward under the BMC. The remain 13 wards have proper supply network.

Houses in these places are largely dependent on groundwater. Many residents also collect drinking water from adjoining areas or buy jars of filtered water as the groundwater is high in iron content.

A senior official of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation said they would receive Rs 53 crore from the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme for the first phase of the water supply project.

The scheme focuses on the development of basic infrastructure for water supply, sewage and septage management, storm water drainage, green spaces and parks, and non-motorised urban transport.

According to the official, work has started on setting up pipelines in the first phase.

In the first phase, 40,432 houses in Wards 22 to 26 — covering large areas of Kestopur, Baguiati and adjoining places — will get water connections.

“We are in the process of setting up a 32km-long water distribution network connecting these households. Once complete, the residents will get filtered water from the New Town water treatment plant,” said the official.

In the second phase, underground water reservoirs and water supply networks will be set up to store and supply filtered water to houses in areas behind Sector V. The reservoirs are likely to be set up in Wards 28 and 35, which cover the bheri areas bordering the East Kolkata Wetlands.

The corporation will next develop the basic infrastructure to set up distribution lines in BMC Wards 1 to 21, covering Baguiati, Kaikhali and Tegharia.

“We have sent a detailed project report to AMRUT. The entire project cost is Rs 333.11 crore," said Tulsi Sinha Roy, mayoral council member in charge of water supply.
