A reservoir-cum-booster pumping station that promises to provide residents in a part of Behala’s Barisha with potable water was inaugurated on Wednesday.

The 13 lakh litre reservoir will store water coming from the Garden Reach waterworks. The areas in the command area of the station have been receiving groundwater extracted through pumps.

The booster pumping station will benefit residents of a section of Ward 123.

Sudip Polley, the ward councillor said residents of Bhubanmohan Roy Road, Ramchandra Palli, Raha Colony, Gopal Colony, Bosepara and Vidyasagar Colony will benefit, among others.

The construction of the semi-underground reservoir-cum-booster pumping station along James Long Sarani started about two years ago and cost about Rs 2 crore, said a CMC official.

“Four pumps that used to extract groundwater to supply in these places will be decommissioned,” said the official.

Polley said the station would start supplying potable water from Thursday.

The CMC official said a booster pumping station along with a reservoir has two functions. The volume of water stored in the reservoir adds to the volume of water that was already going into the network before the reservoir was commissioned.

Secondly, the booster pumping station uses high-powered pumps to push the water into the reservoir for distribution. The additional thrust increases the pressure of water in the distribution network because of which more volume of water reaches pockets that used to receive inadequate volume.
