The two-wheeler collided with the truck in front of 33 Tollygunge Circular Road near a petrol pump around 1.30am, when the boys were heading for their homes in Behala in southwest Kolkata.

Police identified the three as Sayan Roy, 17, Tarak Giri, 17, and Suvendu Bag, 17, — all residents of Behala.

“The boys were flung off the two-wheeler. None of them was wearing helmets. Sayan who was riding the motorcycle received injuries on his head and was declared dead at MR Bangur Hospital,” said an officer of New Alipore police station. The two others were treated and discharged from the hospital.

The motorcycle and the truck were impounded but the truck driver managed to flee the spot. A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered .

“The motorcycle was moving at a high speed. The occupants were not wearing helmets and there was more than one pillion rider - something that often disbalances a two-wheeler when it speeds. It is very unfortunate that a young life was lost,” said an officer of the traffic department.

The case that was initially registered with the New Alipore police station was taken over by the fatal squad of the traffic police.

Three other accidents involving two-wheelers were reported from across the city on Sunday and Monday.

A 28-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Subhankar Das was injured after his bike skidded on Rashbehari Avenue in south Kolkata on Monday morning. Das was treated at a hospital.

A two-and-a-half-year-old child riding pillion on a motorcycle was injured when the motorcycle collided with another bike near Darga Road at Park Circus on Sunday evening.

Another crash involving a two-wheeler was reported at the BL Saha Road and the Roy Bahadur Road crossing in Behala on Sunday. A motorcycle and a scooter collided injuring scooterist Sheikh Salman, 22 and pillion rider Sheikh Imran, 21. The motorcyclist managed to flee the spot.
