The family of Abhirup Banerjee — whose body was found near an under-construction building a stone’s throw away from Eco Park on Wednesday — lodged a murder complaint on Thursday, a senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.
The family members, in their complaint, mentioned that when they last spoke to Banerjee, 31, he sounded normal.
They told the police that he always told them where he was going before stepping out of his rented accommodation in Nayapatty on the fringes of Salt Lake.
Banerjee used to work in a private bank that has its office in Salt Lake. On Wednesday, his body was found lying behind some bushes by the police after some construction workers and passersby spotted it.
A New Town police team that had recovered the body did not find any identity documents or phone on Wednesday.
The body was identified on Wednesday evening after his parents, who live in East Burdwan, came to Electronic Complex police station in Sector V as they could not get in touch with Banerjee since Tuesday night, the police said.
“We had sent out a general alert about a body recovery across all the police stations in our jurisdiction. When the family members landed at the police station in Sector V, officers on duty there asked for his photograph and asthenia features matched.
They were taken to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where they identified him,” said a senior officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate.
One of Banerjee’s family members, who did not wish to be named, said: “He was always cheerful and there is no reason for us to believe that he would commit suicide. We want a thorough investigation into this.”
The police told The Telegraph on Thursday that a preliminary post-mortem report suggested Banerjee had fallen from a height but did not clarify whether it was suicide or murder.
“We have not yet got the final post-mortem report. Till we get that it is too early to say anything,” said Manav Singhal, the deputy commissioner of police, New Town.
