A 58-year-old woman from Bangladesh who was in Kolkata and Madhyamgram for at least 10 days for her cancer treatment died of dengue at AMRI Hospitals Dhakuria on Wednesday, an official of the hospital said.
Shipra Das was suffering from brain cancer and had come to the city from Narail in Bangladesh for treatment. She passed away at 9.15am on Wednesday.
“She died because of sepsis and multi-organ failure, triggered by dengue haemorrhagic fever,” said an official of the hospital. “She was discharged from the hospital on October 27 after radiotherapy. She came back on October 30 with a high fever and was admitted to the hospital the next day. She tested positive for dengue,” said an official of AMRI.
An official of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said Das had also tested positive for dengue at a diagnostic lab in Madhyamgram.
“It seems she was staying somewhere in Madhyamgram while undergoing treatment for other illnesses,” said the official. The woman was suffering from glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of cancer in the brain and spine, besides Hepatitis-B.
“Doctors believe her existing conditions made her more vulnerable to dengue,” said the hospital official. A number of people in Kolkata have died of dengue this year. But neither the state health department nor the KMC has revealed the death toll.
