A man driving an Audi hit a van-puller on Central Avenue and then parked the car almost in the middle of the road and sat on the bonnet on Wednesday morning.

Police said the man, in his 20s, appeared to be intoxicated and was allegedly abusive towards the cops who went to remove him and the car.

The police identified him as Parikshit Jain, a resident of the Watgunge area, who was returning from Sovabazar.

“He was arrested for rash and negligent driving, causing grievous hurt to a person by an act of negligence and drink driving. A large number of liquor bottles were found in his car and his alcohol test was positive,” said an officer.

Jain, the police said, is originally from Uttar Pradesh.

The van-puller was taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, the police said.

Many who saw the crash said a major accident was averted.

“The outcome of the crash could have been worse. Luckily the van-puller did not suffer serious injuries. The man at the wheel was not in his senses,” said a witness.

The police said initially, when he was inside the car, he used abusive language towards the police. Later, he came out and jumped onto the bonnet and sat there.

“He was speaking gibberish. Then he lay down on the bonnet. He had no intention of getting off. He did not appear to be in his senses. He had to be handled carefully,” said an officer.

He was convinced to get off and he and the car were taken to the police station.
