A group of students of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital lodged a complaint of ragging with Tallah police station against some senior students on Wednesday.

The complainants alleged that they were facing “mental trauma, verbal abuse, cast discrimination and physical abuse” by the senior students.

The complaint accuses a group of students, including a few from the final-year of MBBS, of “tormenting” and “abusing” juniors on the college campus and the main boy’s hostel “behind Platinum Jubilee Building and various other places on the college campus.”

The complaint at Tallah was lodged hours after some residents of the RG Kar Medical College’s hostel in Maniktala filed a complaint of “ragging”, “mental torture”, “harassment” and “intimidation” against 13 senior students early on Wednesday.

The two complaints come in the backdrop of a new principal, Manas Kumar Bandyopadhyay, taking over the charge of RG Kar hospital replacing Sandip Ghosh.

On September 11, Ghosh was transferred to the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital sparking protests from a section of students.

In the police complaint lodged with Tallah police station, the students alleged that on September 12, they were physically and mentally harassed and even threatened with “massive consequences” at KB Boy’s Hostel.

“They also charged us with an intent of grievous hurt with compasses and sharp objects. We are terrified and at the brink of breakdown,” says the complaint, adding that such incidents have been “taking place in KB canteen” for a long time.

Police officers said they have sought CCTV camera footage from the boys’ hostel.

“The complaint names at least four final-year students as the tormentors,” said an officer.

Calls to Bandopadhayay, the new principal, didn’t connect. None of the senior college administration officials wanted to speak about the complaint.

“People who filed the complaint at Tallah are those trying to save themselves from the complaint filed by the residents of Maniktala hostel,” said ShantanuSen, the chairman of Rogi Kalyan Samity. “This is a fabricated complaint,” he said.

Calls to Ghosh on Thursday evening went unanswered.
