A student of Class X has been admitted to hospital after a snake bit her at her house in Akandakishori on the fringes of New Town on Thursday evening.

Anisha Naskar was taking off dry clothes from a clothesline at her house when she felt a bite on her leg. As she stepped back she saw a snake slither into the bushes, her family members said.

Anisha raised the alarm. Her father Samaresh and other family members took her to a government-run healthcare unit in Bhangar in North 24-Parganas.

The Naskars live close to where 27-year-old Sourav Naskar, who worked as a security guard in New Town, died after being bitten by a snake in a pond last month.

Akandakishori borders New Town's Action Area III and is quite close to the Sukhobrishti Housing Complex, DLF Elita Garden Vista and New Town Heights among others.

Anisha's family members did not waste any time and took her to the rural hospital in Nalmuri in Bhangar where doctors administered anti-venom.

"She is now under observation," Samaresh Naskar said.

There have been two deaths in and around New Town from snake bites within the past month.

Sourav Naskar was declared brought dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Another man died after being bitten by a snake while he was walking in front of the Downtown Mall in New Town last month.

Snakes are being spotted in New Town and Rajarhat regularly and government hospitals in and around New Town and Rajarhat have recorded more than a dozen cases of snakebites.

Herpetologist Anirban Chaudhuri, who has been conducting workshops on first aid procedures in case of snakebites, said that it was imperative to take snakebite victims to a hospital immediately.

On Thursday, residents of Balaka Abasan spotted a snake inside a flat of the housing complex. The snake could not be captured.
