The spot where the shooting happened is around 18km from the heart of Kolkata and on the fringes of Rajarhat.

The cops said Ghosh was returning from Narayanpur police station after his daily routine appearance at the police station as part of the legal parole protocol when he was attacked. “The man was travelling in a car with an associate. From the number of bullet injuries he suffered, it is apparent that there were multiple assailants in several two-wheelers,” said an officer of Bidhannagar police commissionerate.

The police have detained Ghosh’s associate for interrogation. He did not suffer any injury..

Ghosh, who was serving a life sentence, had come out of jail a few weeks ago and was to return to the jail soon.

The police said they were in the process of collecting CCTV footage from the nearest cameras. They will also examine people in the neighbourhood who could be witnesses in the case.
