The body of a man, who worked in a private bank that has its office in Salt Lake, was found behind some bushes near an under-construction building in New Town on Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The police said a preliminary post-mortem report suggested Abhirup Banerjee, 31, had fallen from a height but did not clarify whether it was suicide or murder.

Banerjee's body could be identified late on Wednesday after his parents, who live in East Burdwan, came to Electronic Complex police station in Sector V as they could not get in touch with him since Tuesday night, a senior officer of Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

Banerjee used to stay in a rented accommodation in Nayapatty on the fringes of Salt Lake after he got the bank job, the officer added.

“The police team that recovered the body did not find any identity card,” said the officer.

According to the officer, they were alerted about a body by some construction workers and passersby who spotted it on Wednesday afternoon.

A team from New Town police station went to the spot after receiving the alert and recovered Banerjee's body and it was sent to the sub-divisional hospital in Salt Lake.

“Banerjee had multiple injuries on the head and legs. He had lost consciousness and could not be revived,” said a doctor who had examined him at the Salt Lake sub-divisional hospital.

Then Banerjee's body was sent to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy. By this time the family members had reached Electronics Complex police station.

The cops there had received an alert about a body that was recovered in New Town. They asked the family members for a photograph.

“We examined the photograph and it bore similarities to the body that had been found. The family members were then taken to the hospital (RG Kar Medical College and Hospital) where they identified him,” said the officer.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Deputy commissioner of New Town Manav Singla said they were probing the case from every angle and foul play had not been ruled out yet.

“We have started a probe and are trying to find out who he spoke to and what he did before switching off his phone,” said Singla.

Another police officer said they are collecting CCTV footage from the area where the body was found.
