The body of a 28-year-old newly married woman was found in the lane in front of her apartment in Baguiati late on Friday, police said.

A team from Nagerbazar police station arrested Kaustav Sarkar, the husband of Titash Nandy, on Saturday after her family lodged a murder complaint against him, a senior officer of Barrackpore commissionerate said.

According to the officer, alerted by a loud noise around 10 pm on Friday, neighbours rushed out of their flats to find Nandy lying in a pool of blood.

Some of them immediately alerted the cops while others called in an ambulance.

Nandy was taken to a nearby government-run healthcare unit where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The body was later sent to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of her death.

According to an officer of Barrackpore commissionerate, Sarkar and Nandy had tied the knot in July.

Sarkar works as a contractual medical officer at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Nandy was a homemaker.

They had moved into the neighbourhood after they rented a flat in the five-storey building.

“The woman’s family members have mentioned in their complaint that there would be regular fights between the two of them. We have also spoken to neighbours and they have told us that they too could hear the couple quarrelling nearly every other day,” said the officer.

On Saturday afternoon, a team of officers visited the flat and spoke to neighbours as well as Nandy’s relatives who live close by.

A team of forensic experts also visited the building and spent close to an hour on the terrace as well as on the road right in front of it.

“We have started investigating the case from every angle. We have arrested the woman’s husband based on a complaint lodged by her family. We had also called in a forensic team and they have collected evidence and taken readings from the spot,” said a senior officer of Barrackpore commissionerate.

One of Nandy’s relatives, who did not wish to be named, said she had spotted Sarkar running away from the area shortly after the neighbours alerted her that Nandy was found lying in a pool of blood on the road in front of the flat.

Sarkar has been charged under various sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder) and 304A (causing death by negligence).
