Her mother and brother were home when she fell. Tamanna’s father stays abroad, police said.

Guards heard a loud thud and spotted the teenager lying on the ground in a pool of blood. “She was taken to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared dead,” said an officer at Kasba police station.

An officer who is part of the team investigating Tamanna’s death said they learnt from the family that she was preparing for competitive exams. None of the family members was available to verify the information.

“The family has not lodged any complaint,” an officer said on Sunday evening.
