Radhika Ruia and Siddhant Gupta, founding teachers, Isha Yogashala, a ‘classical Hatha yoga centre’ on Russell Street, from the Sadhguru and Isha Foundation umbrella, look calm with a certain softness of features that’s the mark of an empathetic core. They are both Isha Hatha yoga teachers and as they celebrate a year of their first studio, Siddhant chatted with t2 about how yoga has impacted his life, and more.

We have heard several stories of the transformational impact of yoga. What has been your personal experience like?

My personal experience with yoga has been nothing short of transformative. It has empowered me physically, provided me with mental resilience, and allowed me to embark on a journey of self-exploration and spiritual growth. It has become an integral part of my daily routine and a source of inspiration, guiding me towards a more balanced and harmonious way of life.

Physically, yoga has helped me develop strength, flexibility, and balance. Through regular practice, I have noticed a significant improvement not just in my posture and alignment but my stamina and overall body awareness. It has enhanced my physical capabilities and given me a deeper appreciation for the remarkable capabilities of our bodies.

Mentally, yoga has provided me with a sanctuary of calmness and inner peace. By focusing on the present moment and connecting with my breath, yoga has taught me to manage my emotions and find a sense of serenity and clarity in the midst of life’s challenges.

Yoga for me has transcended the boundaries of the yoga mat and permeated into my everyday life. It has influenced my choices, habits, and interactions, encouraging me to take a step towards more conscious living.

How has it impacted your quality of life?

Yoga has significantly enhanced the quality of my life. It has provided me with physical vitality, mental clarity, and emotional resilience. I have experienced improved physical health, increased energy levels and a greater sense of well-being. Mentally, it has helped me manage stress, find inner peace and approach situations with a calm and centred mindset. Emotionally, it has allowed me to cultivate self-awareness, develop emotional intelligence and nurture a positive outlook on life.

How do you view the world and your relationships now? Are you kinder and more empathetic?

Yoga in its true sense literally means ‘union’ and refers to an inner state where one experiences everything as a part of oneself. As a result of my practices, yoga has expanded my awareness and deepened my understanding of the interconnectedness of all beings. I approach interactions with a greater sense of compassion, seeking to understand others’ perspectives and respond with empathy. Yoga has helped me cultivate a kinder and more compassionate attitude towards myself and those around me, fostering harmonious and meaningful relationships.

When did you take over the reins of Yogashala?

We opened the first studio on the occasion of International Day of Yoga, 2022 and as we complete a year it gives us immense joy to see how much it has grown over time. We have over 150 members now and have helped bring the joy of yoga to over 500 participants.

What is your message for all those who haven’t embraced yoga yet?

I would say open your heart and mind to the possibilities that yoga holds and give yourself the gift of exploring its profound benefits. Whether you are seeking physical fitness, stress relief, or inner peace, yoga has something to offer everyone. Take that first step, attend a class, or start with simple practices at home. Allow yourself to experience the beauty of yoga and witness the positive changes it can bring. Embrace yoga as a lifelong companion and discover the immense joy and transformation it can bring to your life.

I hope my experience resonates with you, and I encourage you to explore the transformative power of yoga for yourself. May it bring you profound joy, well-being, and a deeper connection to your true self.
