Supercar makers are going where nobody expected them to go with the preference for SUV-type forms and attributes remaining as strong as ever. Lamborghini was one of the early ones in its category to decide to make an SUV and the Urus has proved to be a hot-seller for the company. Now, it has brought out the Huracan Sterrato, a completely edgy take on a go-anywhere (okay, not entirely) supercar. The production run, which will start next month, will be limited to 1,499 units.

While at the core it remains the Huracan with its 5-litre, 610hp, V10 power plant, it is also prepped for performance with weight reduction aids. Visually, it is quite different from the smoother looking Huracans. It rides higher, has a front skid plate and a pair of lights on the nose, a side skirt and a rear diffuser, which make it look quite the part. The chassis is an aluminum and carbon fibre hybrid affair with the outer skin made from aluminum and composite material. The air intake at the top is to ensure that the engine gets clean air even in dusty conditions.

The Sterrato has greater ground clearance, of around 170mm, as compared to other Huracans and also comes with a pair of bright lamps on the nose to light up the way. The skid plate up front with strakes in the colours of the Italian flag are an addition for the Sterrato.

Independent double-wishbone suspension is on all wheels which are held in place by steel springs and hydraulic dampers with MagneRide electromagnetic damper control. ANIMA, as the drive mode selector is called in Lamborghini, controls the stablility control system (this can be deactivated) and ABS characteristics. Braking is done by carbon-ceramic ventilated and cross drilled discs (380 x 38 mm front, 356 x 32 mm rear) with six-piston aluminum fixed monoblock calipers (front) and four-piston (rear). The car rides on 40 profile tyres Dueler 235/40 R19 (front) - 285/40 R19 (rear).

Sharad Agarwal, head of Lamborghini India, said, “With the launch of the Huracan Sterrato, we are breaking into new grounds and staying true to our beliefs as a pioneering, daring, and inventive brand.” Lamborghini is probably the first supercar maker to have tried to make an SUV, the LM002 of the ’80s, even if it was a one-off, long before other luxury companies jumped into the fray.

The Sterrato comes shod with 19-inch Bridgestone Dueler tyres and its cabon-ceramic brakes provide the car some serious stopping power.

The interior is typical Huracan but there has been an effort to save weight. So the seat positioning is manual and there are lightweight materials all around and there are straps to yank to open the doors rather than handles. The seats are essentially lightweight carbon fibre tubs with the right cushioning and contouring. The central console (left) has the usual setup with the infotainment screen, gear selector, starter button and brake. The drive mode selector is on the steering wheel. It has a 610hp V10 and all wheel drive as the moniker shows.

The Huracán Sterrato comes with an updated version of the LDVI (Lamborghini Integrated Vehicle Dynamics) system, with specific STRADA and SPORT calibrations, and bringing the RALLY mode for low-grip conditions to the Huracan line for the first time. It will be a different experience for sure.

The Lamborghini Lounge

The Lamborghini Lounge — this was the evening view and it did attract attention even among the high-end boats — was docked at the Pearl marina in Doha during the FIFA World Cup 2022. It travels from place to place, mostly with events, and owners of cars with the fighting bull on its nose can drop by for eats and drinks. At the watch boutique on the upper deck, one can buy Lamborghini co- branded Roger Dubuis watches that are specially designed with cues from Lamborghini cars. There are open sitting areas on both the upper and lower decks where one can have a drink or a coffee and enjoy the view of the marina. The Lounge was assembled at Doha just before the quarter-final matches and remained for the duration of the World Cup.

It is possible to specify the seatbelt colours as well and one doesn’t have to settle for the usual black or grey or beige that are common to most cars
