There are those who stream videos during commutes but I like to play puzzles and games. The latest to find a space on the iPhone is Illustrated, whichi s available on Apple Arcade,the video game subscription service from the tech giant.
Developed by BorderLeap,the makers of Patterned,the new title presents a wide selection of jigsaw puzzles in which the player needs to decode pieces of art work from artists around the world. Each puzzle has a story to tell and the interface is well arranged.On the horizontal scrollbar are pieces of the puzzle and the best way to begin is by selecting the pieces that go around the perimeter and then you have to carefully analyse colour schemes. The vertical scrollbar has a few tools, the most helpful of which is the ‘magnet attachment’. It automatically places a piece in the right place on the board but the tool can only be used a few times.
What interested me the most is the series of ‘Van Gogh puzzles’ from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. As you correctly place the pieces,pictures come alive with colour while the words behind the story are slowly revealed. The collaboration with the VanGogh Museum also celebrates the Amsterdam address’ 50th anniversary. There are select galleries — Van Gogh’s Early Years and Van Gogh in Paris— with plans to add more from the museum later in the year. Each puzzle takes a long time but you won’t get bored, thanks to the background music.
