This love month, Sawansukha Jewellers is celebrating hugs with their specially curated limited-edition collection titled ‘Hugs’. In a chat with t2, Siddhartha Sawansukha, MD, Sawansukha Jewellers, talks about the thought that went into making the hug-shaped jewellery.

What is the idea behind the Hugs collection?

It has been for over 250 years that people have trusted Sawansukha for their wedding trousseau. Amidst all that trust and loyalty we have received from our patrons, we realised that there should be something for vidai when the girl can carry over to her new home some emotion from her parent’s house. However, that is not to say this jewellery is only for the newlyweds. This can be a gift to a bride-to-be. Looking at the greater perspective, this is an emotional collection that can be linked with many people beyond the realms of marriage, perhaps people who we have parted ways with because we had to.

Why is this collection called Hugs?

Smile is one of the biggest assets we have on our face. Half the battle is won if you have a smile on your face. Likewise, we thought there is one more gesture that we could cash in on. A hug is a very expressive aspect of us. As soon as you hug, you don’t need to speak anything. It is expressive of how you feel about the person. Even an iron heart will melt as soon as you hug. This Hug collection will help a father who cannot easily express his emotions every time, to convey the same to his daughter by gifting her a ‘Hug’ pendant with her name on it. She will take along her father’s heartfelt emotions as she bids adieu to her own house. The personalisation feature of the pieces makes them even more expressive. The name of the recipient, the year and a message can be incorporated into the same. On top of that, there is also a mechanism part to it. The pendant, when touched, moves a little bit. This has been designed thoughtfully so that we can move the two people that we see in the piece and bring them even closer.

What are the variations in this line?

The pieces are available in rose gold, yellow gold and white gold. We wanted to keep the variations because skin tone varies from person to person and different people can choose to wear a different colour. The pendants are a depiction of an overhead shot of two people hugging each other. They are made of 18K gold and the finest natural diamonds out there.

Did you personally design these pieces?

My daughter, Anya, and I designed this collection together, sitting at home last year. She was about to leave for her higher education and I thought what I could give her that she could carry along for the longest of time. Once she liked the concept, I was instantly sure others would like it too because she is a teenager and for someone of her age, I think their choices matter. The packaging comes with a personalisation note right inside where the giver can pen down their thoughts for the recipient.

How long did it take to make this collection?

It took us around eight months to launch this collection.

What do you think makes this collection lovable by people across generations?

The intent, the design feasibility, the wearability and the price point have appealed to a lot of people and will hopefully continue to be popular in the coming days.
