To inculcate scientific temperament and encourage scientific curiosity among students, to generate awareness of environmental issues and to motivate them towards creating a healthier and better planet with the help of science, The Assembly of God Church School, Tollygunge, organised Innowiz, a two-day interschool science fest at its campus last month. Principal of Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration, Dr. Abhijit Datta, who was the chief guest, inaugurated the fest by lighting a special lava lamp made of vegetable oil, baking soda, vinegar and colours, that was created by students of Assembly of God Church School, Tollygunge. This was followed by an array of interesting experiments performed on stage by students of the host school.

The fest was participated by 15 schools, including St.Thomas’ Day School, South City International School, Garden High School, The Ballygunge Siksha Sadan, St.Thomas’ Girls School and Julien Day School. Among the competitive events were ChemCanvas — a poster-making competition, Clash of Words — a science debate, Mathobrik — a model-making competition based on any mathematical concept, Mathomaze — an event based on mental mathematics, Techkriti — a website-designing competition, Mechathlon — an event based on implementing a prototype application, Mind-Martians — a science quiz, Farm to Fork — a non-fire cooking contest, and Earthly Artistry — a competition on making recycled products, among many others. The fest also included an exhibition of models (several of them being working models) based on scientific concepts by budding science wizards of The Assembly of God Church School, Tollygunge. Though the energy, enthusiasm and competitive spirit among the students were commendable, the fest brought home the fact that team spirit is more important than winning any event. The competitive events were judged by an eminent panel including Chittaranjan Sinha, HOD of chemistry, Jadavpur University, Dr. Goutam Paul, associate professor, Indian Statistical Institute, scientist Dr. Laxmikanta Nayak, and Dr. Susmita Duari, HOD of chemistry, M.P. Birla Foundation H.S. School.
