December 16 was a significant milestone for Modern High School (MHS) on two fronts. First, it marked seven decades of the institution’s legacy. Second, it heralded the inauguration of the new wing, the Modern High School International (MHSI), situated in Ballygunge, adjacent to the original school. The occasion was graced by a distinguished gathering comprising students, educators, alumni, and esteemed members including founders, chairpersons, and individuals from the Birla family. Dr. K. Kasturirangan, former chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (third from the right), and Nirmala Birla, chairperson of MHSI and MHS (third from the left), were honoured as chief guests. Joining them were key personalities, including (L-R) Nandini Ghatak, the principal of MHSI; Amita Birla, the co-chairman of the CK Birla Group and chairman of Birlasoft Ltd; C. K. Birla, the chairman of CK Birla Group; and Devi Kar, the director of MHSI

To wrap up the inauguration, the school band performed several songs before the guests proceeded to the MHS grounds
The second part of the celebration was dedicated to 70 years of MHS. The celebration took off on the grounds of the girl’s school with a traditional dance by the school students
Devi Kar gave the welcoming speech and the felicitation of the alumni began. The first person to be felicitated was Indologist and theatre personality Nandini Bhowmik (above), from the 1978 batch
The next alumnae to be felicitated was neuroscientist Piali Sengupta from the batch of 1981. As she could not be present in person, she thanked her school via a video message
The last alumnae to be felicitated was Jaya Bhagat, principal accountant general and officer on special duty, in Maharashtra
Nostalgia filled the air as former students and teachers of the school took a moment to pose in front of the ‘I Love MHS’ selfie corner
While at a reunion, it is obvious that the school song will be sung. Everyone present stood up and sang the anthem honouring their school
The celebrations wrapped up with a concert by pianist Sourendro Mullick and vocalist Soumyojit Das. While the attendees were first enjoying themselves in their seats, eventually, they all got up on the dance floor to shake a leg
Among the attendees, we also spotted (left) Alokananda Roy and (right) Rakhi Sarkar, founder of CIMA Gallery, catching up with old classmates
