Ujjiban, a cancer survivors’ interaction programme, was hosted on November 27 at the Rotary Sadan. It was organised by the Picnic Garden Lila Seba Society. The event was held to discuss cancer and the chances to fight and defeat the disease. Members of the audience spoke about their journey with blood cancer and provided hope, will power and strength to other cancer patients.

Challenges and trauma

Haemato-oncologist, Dr Soumya Bhattacharya, said, “Cancer patients go through so many challenges during treatment. If you have a family history (of cancer) or have a high risk of developing cancer, it is important to follow the doctor’s screening recommendations. While recognising cancer, warning signs may help cancer patients seek diagnosis and treatment. Some cancers may be harder to detect early and may not show symptoms until later stages. When someone is diagnosed with blood cancer, every minute counts.”

Recalling his journey, 26-year-old PhD scholar, Kingshuk Das, said, “In 2011, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and declared cured after chemotherapy. But a year later, it relapsed and in February 2013, I was referred to Dr Soumya Bhattacharya for bone marrow transplantation.” After a successful transplant, Kingshuk completed his bachelor's and master's in chemistry.

The survivors stressed on self-confidence and will power. Apart from the regulated treatment, they were also advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The slightest symptom of cancer which may include night sweats, pain, fatigue, weight loss, fever and more; needed to be reported to the doctor right away for early detection and proper treatment.
