From needle work to acrylic and from ceramic to fibreglass, varied media of artworks engross Kolkatans at weeklong fest

Charu Kala Parshad and the department of information and cultural affairs are holding an art exhibition and mela named ‘Charukala Utsav’ at the Rabindra Sadan-Nandan complex till November 9 between 2pm and 8pm. The festival not only has art exhibitions but an art mela too

Exhibitions are on at the Academy of Fine Arts and Gaganendra Shilpa Pradarshanshala. At the Academy, artists from all over Bengal aged between 25 and 45 have got opportunity to exhibit their pieces of art. Paintings on different mediums like watercolour, charcoal, woodcut, sketches and even sculptures made of wood, fibreglass can be seen

A lot of images made with needle work are also exhibited. From floral aplic work which depicts a garden by artist Shilpa Dutta to images like electric meter box by artist Sandipan Acharya are sure to catch attention.

Exhibits of respected artists like Subrata Gangopadhyay, Diptish Ghosh Dastidar, Shipra Bhattacharya and others are on display at Gaganendra Shilpa Pradarshanshala. Speaking about the festival Diptish Ghosh Dastidar, a contemporary artist whose paintings are also exhibited said: “It’s really nice to see works of so many talented artists every year in this exhibition. You get to see the works of the upcoming generation. But it's also heart wrenching to see a lot of them get diverted and not pursue this field further”

An art mela has also been organised. Stalls of different artists from different parts of Bengal like Nadia, South and North 24-Parganas, Cooch Behar and others have participated. Not only artists, different groups of artists like Salt Lake Srijon group of contemporary artists, Muktoporag and others have taken part in the mela. You can get framed paintings in different mediums. Sketches are also available. Price depends on the kind and size of the painting

Some have exhibited their stalls in open fields too. Pencil sketches, water colours, Madhubani paintings and different forms of paintings by artist groups are also on display. Exhibits made of ceramic are eye-catching. One such stall is from Purba Bardhaman where you can get different ceramic items like tea cups, coffee mugs, small flower vases. All are handmade and prices start from Rs 200
