Q: I am pursuing majors in communicative English from Calcutta University. I am also learning Spanish. I want to be a news anchor. Should I do an MBA in HR? What are the other options?

Reshmi Ghosh

A: If you want to be a news anchor, why do you want to do an MBA in HR? You would have to possess the qualities and competencies to become a news anchor. The factors which will matter are knowledge of English or vernacular language, good diction, great looks, grooming, personality and smartness to face the camera live.

Q: I am an MBA from Calcutta University and have six years of experience in media, manufacturing and real estate. I am working as an HR manager. I want to shift to academics. What should I do?

Saikat Das Gupta

A: If you want to be a teacher, you would require a BEd degree, which I suppose you do not possess. If you have not crossed that age you can still go for it. Otherwise, you can opt for teaching in various private institutes which offer short-term courses. You can also join an NGO which is involved in the education sector.

Q: I am doing BTech in applied electronics and instrumentation. I want a government job. Can you suggest what are the areas I should look at?

Biswajit Majumdar

A: Government jobs have their own requirements and you need to sit for entrance exams. If you are interested, you need to see where your profile would fit and the criteria for those jobs and proceed accordingly. You can also try for government undertakings dealing with IT and electronics.

Q: I am an MBA (HR) and working in an MNC for the past six months as an HR generalist. Should I do ERP / SAP for better opportunities? Can you suggest names of the institutes which offer such courses in Calcutta?

Avijit Banerjee

A: I do not think doing a SAP-HR course would help you much because there are not too many organisations here who have opted for the HR module in SAP. You have been working for only six months and I think you should wait another year and see which part of HR interests you more and then go for specialised short-term courses in those areas, if required. But, honestly, if you do your job well, you would learn on-the-job.

Q: I have passed BPharm and work as a production officer in a pharmaceuticals manufacturing unit. I want to study further while working. What should I do?

Srikantyo Patyel

A: You can do MPharm if you want to enhance your qualifications. But since you are in production, I think you can also go for short-term courses in quality-related aspects which would augment your education and experience.

Q: I am a graduate in biology. What are the prospects of MSc in wildlife science in India and abroad? Can I become a wildlife biologist?

Syed Muzammil

A: MSc in wildlife sciences is offered at the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehra Dun. Also, the Wildlife Conservation Society of India offers a PG course in wildlife biology and conservation. You can become a wildlife biologist after completing the course based on the subject you have chosen to graduate in. The course aims to produce practising wildlife biologists who can actively promote and advance science-based conservation of and wildlife. To be effective conservation scientists, you must also understand relevant social, political and economic issues that impact wildlife conservation. Further, you must possess communication and problem-solving skills to be an effective conservation leader.

Q: I am 27 years old and have passed IATA and UFTAA foundation course. I am working in an IATA travel agency as a ticketing executive. I want to do a consultant course in IATA and UFTAA. Would that ensure a good job?

Rajesh Manna

A: An education is just the entry to a job, which becomes “good” only when you excel in it. Your education can definitely enhance your job prospects, but after that you are the one who is going to chart your own course.

Q: I have a bachelors in travel and tourism management from George College and also have a diploma in the same from Netaji Subhas Open University. I have also done masters in the same subject from Ignou. How can I get a job in government tourism department? Is it possible to get a bank loan to set up a tourism business?

Abhijnan Mukherjee

A: You have asked questions on the two ends of the spectrum. People usually choose government jobs for stability and start their own business only when they have a risk appetite. Nevertheless, for a government job in the tourism department, they advertise in newspapers. You can get a bank loan but the extent would depend on your security deposit. For small businesses there are schemes under MSME, wherein they provide short term loans to entrepreneurs.

Q: I am 30 years old. I have completed MCom and MBA (finance) and have six years of experience in the BPO industry. I got an offer from a UK-based company for administration department without any interview being held. My date of joining is November 1. Is it possible to get a job without an interview in any company?

Jayanta Kumar Bera

A: You must look into the antecedents of the organisation that has offered you the job. Any organisation would first interview and then appoint. I am sceptical about the organisation you are mentioning unless they have a very good reason to do so. Please check before you submit your resignation in the current organisation.
