The thieves, identified as Sain Kumar alias Sonu, 35, and Shivjid Mahto, 35, were nabbed along with the minor from the station on Tuesday evening.

A policeman said the trio were detained on the basis of CCTV camera footage that caught them moving suspiciously near the booking counter for Lohardaga-bound trains.

“We interrogated them and searched their pockets. Two stolen mobile phones were recovered from their possession. On the basis of their statement, eight mobiles were recovered from their rented house near Ravi Steel Factory in Pandra, about 15km from the station,” the cop said.

Officer-in-charge of Government Railway Police (GRP) at Ranchi station, Ramesh Kumar said the trio were staying in the city as garment sellers. “They had stolen the mobile phone of Hatia resident Sanjay Paswan on February 15 when he was talking to the ticket examiner. Paswan reported the theft to us. When we watched the CCTV footage, we noticed them and kept their pictures with us,” Kumar said.

He said when he spotted them at the station on Tuesday evening and called out loud, they started running. “The constables chased and caught them.” he added.
