Loktantra Bachao Abhiyan (save democracy campaign) Yatra, a collective effort of rights outfits and social workers of Jharkhand, reached the Singhbhum parliamentary constituency on Saturday.

The yatra, which is a mass-contact programme on a hybrid mode, claims to “save democracy in Jharkhand, the country and constitutional values during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls” and aims to inform the masses about the anti-people and anti-tribal policies of the Modi-led central government in the last 10 years.

“During the yatra, meetings were held in different villages under Assembly constituencies of Chaibasa Sadar, Chakradharpur and Seraikela. The meetings were held in haats (village markets) and gram sabhas with the distribution of leaflets and posters highlighting the wrongdoings of the current central government,” said Ramesh Jerai, one of the members of the campaign based in Chaibasa.

Singhbhum (ST reserved) parliamentary constituency is represented by the lone Congress Lok Sabha MP from Jharkhand, Geeta Koda, and almost all the Assembly constituencies falling under the parliamentary seat were won by the alliance of the JMM and the Congress.

“The government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has grossly violated the rights of tribals, Dalits, backward classes, minorities, farmers, labourers and women. There have been targeted attacks on tribals and their water, forests, land and minerals,” said a communique issued by the Abhiyan members.

The campaign members also informed the villagers during the meeting that after winning the elections in Chhattisgarh recently, the BJP government had deployed paramilitary forces in the Hasdeo forest and taken away tribal lands for the capitalists.
