Police on Monday detained four youths for allegedly creating a ruckus at the food stalls near DM Madan Girls High School under Bistupur police station on Sunday night.

The young men in their early 20s had overturned a pushcart selling snacks and assaulted two snack vendors after a brawl broke out over the youths driving their SUV through the crowded place.

The youths were later beaten up by the vendors.

The incident took place at around 10.30pm on Sunday when the place was bustling with people enjoying their weekend at the roadside eateries. Trouble started when owner of an eatery objected to the young men driving their SUV at a high speed through the congested stretch where over a dozen vendors sell snacks.

“The youths got down from their car and engaged in a heated argument with the vendor, Nirmal Gope. But the quartet retreated when some of the customers intervened,” an eyewitness, Sanjay Prasad, told The Telegraph.

Prasad said the same youths returned to the spot after around half an hour and started raining blows on Gope and overturned his pushcart.

They also damaged a car parked near the row of push-carts there.

On seeing the young men roughing up Gope, other vendors came to his rescue and started pelting the SUV with stones.

Customers who had turned up at the eateries got frightened and left the place.

“While the vendors and the youths were assaulting each other, a police party reached the spot and intervened,” Prasad said.

Office in-charge of Bistupur police station Rajesh Prakash Sinha said they had already registered a case in this connection.

“The youths, who were led by one young man, had created trouble near DM Madan Girls High School. We are investigating the matter and also talking to the vendors who were involved in the brawl,” Sinha said, adding that the four youths live in Adityapur.
