Dumka police on Thursday arrested Jetha Tuddu (27) a resident of Pokharia village of Shikaripara police station of Dumka in connection with the murder of a tribal girl of the adjoining Hasapathar Village, Basmati Hembrom (25) of January 12.

Tudu who fled away after the murder to Jangipur area of Bengal was arrested from a Brick Kiln of Jangipur by a special team of Dumka police, investigating the case. Police also recovered a mobile phone and blood stained pant of Tudu as evidence.

Notably, the defaced body of Basmati Hembrom was found lying in a pool of blood a few yards away from his house in Hasapathar Village on January 13 as Jetha Tudu had bludgeoned her to death and ran away from the site.

Bajun Kisku, father of deceased Basmati Hembrom who lodged an FIR in Shikaripara police station on January 13 said, “I was away at my in laws place at Shivlibona village along with his wife Sunita Murmu and my daughter was at my the house along with her grandmother.”

The victim's grandmother informed family members that Basmati received a call on her mobile phone at around 12 am on January 12 after which she went out of the house despite her (grandmother’s) advice not to go out. When the grandmother woke up next morning she found Basmati’s dead body some distance away from the house and informed neighbors who in turn informed Basmati’s parents. The grandmother also informed that she had also heard the sound of a bike outside the house when Basmati went out of the house.

Police had recovered a pant at the incident site and suspected the hand of Jetha Tudu behind the incident and her absence from the village further propelled the police to doubt about his involvement in the incident

Noor Mustafa, Sub Divisional Police officer of Dumka said “Tudu accepted his involvement in case before the police during interrogation.

“He further revealed that though he was in love with Basmati she was also in touch with other boys and he disliked her talking to other boys and advised her not to talk with them but she didn’t pay heed to his requests,” said Mustafa.

On the fateful night on January 12, Tudu came to her house and spent a few hours with her and later took her to a bushy area where he killed her by attacking with a large boulder and later fled away.
