Jharkhandbased IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) continues to arouse curiosity in mathematics and science among students in rural schools of the Dhanbad district.
The tech cradle’s department of management studies which has so far conducted seven workshops on mathematics and science, life and career continued with its ongoing awareness drive on Saturday at Upgraded High School, Raghunathpur, East Tundi Dhanbad.
The team was led by assistant professor Rashmi Singh as the principal investigator of the project of the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), department of Science & Technology (DST). The team reached the school on Saturday morning and addressed over 250 participants, including students and teachers.
Professor Singh in her address explained to the students the significance of science and mathematics in understanding technology in today’s technology-driven era.
“Almost everything that we use in today’s time, be it mobile, TV, computer, refrigerator, washing machine, dishwashers are technology dependent, so the knowledge about science and mathematics helps us to understand the operation and functioning of these equipment,” said professor Singh in her address.
“Knowledge of mathematics and science offers power of reasoning, creativity, abstract or spatial thinking, critical thinking, problem-solving ability and even effective communication skills that is essential for any role or responsibility in the technical domain,” professor Singh said.
She also emphasised the need to ask questions about everything that we see, feel or live in to understand the system dynamics in the true sense.
Another faculty of IIT (ISM) Niladri Das highlighted the fact that the knowledge of mathematics helps to understand costs, balance a bank account, and subtract balances which are essential skills in today’s world.
He further said that knowledge of mathematics allows us to understand basic life skills such as managing budget, forecasting, and telling time and also allows us to understand basic life skills such as managing budget, forecasting, and telling time.
These workshops for rural schools began in August.
