The Supreme Court collegium on Thursday said it would “have no hesitation” in revealing the reasons for transferring high court judges, issuing the unusual warning in the face of criticism of several recent transfers.

A statement issued on behalf of the collegium of the five senior-most judges said that each recommendation for a transfer had “cogent reasons” and was made “in the interests of better administration”.

“Certain reports relating to recommendations recently made by the collegium regarding transfer of chief justices/ judges of the high courts have appeared in the media,” the statement said.

Sources said the collegium was upset at criticism from Bar associations and the media of several recent judges’ transfers, including that of Madras High Court Chief Justice Vijaya Tahilramani to Meghalaya High Court.

Justice Tahilramani had tendered her resignation after the collegium stood by its decision.
