New Delhi, July 11: A 50-year-old assistant sub-inspector with Delhi police was arrested today for allegedly raping a domestic help at gunpoint.

The alleged incident took place on Thursday night when ASI Jagveer Singh, who was posted at Punjabi Bagh police station in west Delhi, had gone to his friend's place.

In her complaint, the 24-year-old victim said the accused had been under the influence of alcohol and raped her at gunpoint.

Jagveer was arrested early this morning after the victim lodged the complaint on Friday night. "Soon after the complaint, the victim was taken to a government hospital for a medical examination which confirmed rape," a senior Delhi police officer said.

Delhi police commissioner B.S. Bassi said Jagveer has been dismissed from service. "There is no question of waiting for a departmental inquiry. He has been dismissed. We will work to ensure that a chargesheet is filed at the earliest and the accused is convicted."

Jagveer was produced before a court, which sent him to judicial custody for 14 days.

A probe has revealed that the accused met the victim's employer in January during the investigation of a case and had befriended him. "The victim told us that on the day of the incident Jagveer visited his friend's house and was in an inebriated condition. She was asked by her employer to take the accused to the guest room where he raped her at gunpoint. He also threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about it," another officer said.

Sources said the victim, initially scared to register a complaint, narrated the incident to a friend who helped her inform the police.

"Any policeman indulging in transgression of law will not be spared," Delhi police chief Bassi said. "We are determined to take the strictest (possible) action."

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party demanded Bassi's resignation. "This is a serious issue and law and order is crumbling in Delhi. The crime graph has increased by 100 per cent and incidents of rape are increasing. If a policeman is himself involved in rape, it reflects the priority of the police," AAP leader Ashish Khetan said.
