The parents of the MTech student of IIT Delhi who was found hanging in his hostel room on February 16 have alleged harassment by two faculty members and a fellow student.

Sanjay Kashinath Nerkar and Bharti Sanjay Nerkar have written a complaint letter to IIT Delhi director Prof Rangan Banerjee stating that their son Varad took the extreme step after facing repeated harassment from his two guides and a PhD student.

Demanding action against the accused, Varad’s parents said he was a promising, intelligent and hardworking student throughout his career.

They said Varad was working on a project but his guide started giving him some other work because of which his project suffered. Varad was depressed over it. He had changed his guide last year but the situation did not change.

His father told The Telegraph that Varad was made to work for long hours in the lab but did not get adequate guidance. “Our son was harassed by the guides and the PhD student over his research work. He was discussing it with us. Finally, he took this step,” his father said.

He said the complaint was sent to the IIT director on Sunday evening, but no one from the institute had contacted them.
