Pakistani snipers killed a soldier in Poonch sector across the Line of Control on Monday, their fourth scalp in four days, and injured another critically.

Three soldiers and an army porter had died between Friday and Sunday in Pakistani sniper fire.

A defence spokesman in Jammu accused Pakistan of unprovoked ceasefire violation at 5.15pm in the Krishna Ghati sector of Mendhar, Poonch. He identified the slain soldier as Lance Naik Antony Sebastian K.M., 34, from Manakunnambin in Kerala.

“Havildar Mari Muthu D. is critically injured. Immediate resuscitation and medical aid was provided to the soldier,” he said, adding that Indian soldiers retaliated strongly and effectively on Pakistani army posts.

On Sunday, Naik Gosavi Keshav Somgir, 29, who was manning a forward post in Kalal, Noushera sector, was shot by a Pakistani sniper. Somgir was from Nashik.

Sniper fire killed a soldier from Jammu’s Reasi area in Rajouri, Jammu, on Saturday and an army porter in Akhnoor, Jammu, on Friday.

Officials said the Indian side retaliated heavily in each of these days but the casualties, if any, on the other side could not be ascertained.

Pakistan is increasingly using snipers on the borders and inside the Valley. Three jawans had died in three sniper attacks in the Valley last month. The Jaish-e-Mohammad was behind these attacks.
