Opposition parties are planning to jointly oppose Narendra Modi’s “one-nation-one-poll” proposal at a meeting the Prime Minister has called on Wednesday as they feel the idea is not only impractical but inherently flawed too.

A meeting of Opposition parties called by Sonia Gandhi discussed this issue on Tuesday but another interaction to concretise the position may take place on Wednesday morning before the meeting that Modi has called.

The general opinion is the idea should be opposed tooth and nail.

The Congress has in the past been critical of the proposal to hold elections to Parliament and Assemblies together. The Left, too, has rejected the idea as undemocratic and unreasonable and the Opposition parties are expected to speak in one voice at Wednesday’s meeting.

It is not clear who from the Congress would attend the meeting called by the Prime Minister. While the presidents of parties have been invited, Congress sources were not sure if Rahul Gandhi would be present.

Among those scheduled to attend are CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury and BJD boss and Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

At consultations initiated by the Law Commission on simultaneous elections earlier, the CPM had opposed the proposal, dubbing it “anti-democratic and anti-federal”.

Given that the invitation to party leaders states that they can raise other issues too, Yechury is likely to bring up the doubts about electronic voting machines, electoral reforms and cow vigilantism.
