Oct. 21: Sushil Biswas, a first-time Trinamul Congress MLA from Nadia’s Krishnaganj, died at his Dafarpota village home near Krishnagar town early today following cardiac arrest. He was 64.

Biswas is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Family members said Biswas had been suffering from kidney-related problems for the past two years and undergoing dialysis. He was taken to Christian Medical College, Vellore, last week and had returned on Sunday.

Biswas, a primary school teacher, was a three-time CPM MLA from Krishnaganj since 1992 before he joined Trinamul in 2006. He won the same seat on a Trinamul ticket in the 2011 Assembly polls, defeating his nearest CPM rival by over 20,000 votes.

Biswas’s death has necessitated a bypoll in the Krishnagar Assembly seat. By-election will also be held to the Bongaon Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant last week following Trinamul MP Kapilkrishna Thakur’s death.
