Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who met Narendra Modi for the first time after his return to power on Wednesday, said she had discussed the proposal to change the state’s name from West Bengal to Bangla.

After the meeting, she was asked if she had discussed the National Register of Citizens (NRC) with the Prime Minister and she replied in the negative.

Mamata described the meeting as successful and said Modi had assured her that he would take steps on the issue of renaming Bengal. She also said that she had sought his suggestions on the new name for the state. No political issues were discussed during the meeting, she said.

The Trinamul Congress leader added that she had invited the Prime Minister to the inauguration of a coal block in the state which will see an investment of Rs 12,000 crore and generate employment for around one lakh people.

When a journalist asked her to comment on the Saradha deposit default case, she said she would not answer the 'nuisance question'.

The Bengal Opposition smelt a link between the trip and the CBI’s renewed interest in former Calcutta police commissioner Rajeev Kumar in connection with the Saradha case.

But government sources argued that a breakdown in communication between the chief executives of the state and the country was not good for governance.
