INX Media case: Delhi court extends judicial custody of Chidambaram till October 3

A Delhi court on Thursday extended till October 3 the judicial custody of former finance minister P. Chidambaram in connection with the INX Media case.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for CBI, sought extension of the judicial custody, saying there has been no change of circumstance from the day he was first sent to jail.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Chidambaram, opposed the probing agency's plea to extend his judicial custody.

Special judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar also allowed medical examination of Chidambaram, after Sibal moved an application on behalf of the Congress leader seeking regular medical checkup and adequate supplementary diet during his judicial custody in Tihar Jail.

Sibal informed the court that the 73-year old Congress leader is suffering from various ailments and has lost weight during the custody.

Chidambaram was sent to judicial custody on September 5.

The CBI had registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of Rs. 305 crore in 2007 during Chidambaram's tenure as finance minister.

Thereafter, the ED lodged a money laundering case in this regard in 2017.

Chidambaram, who was Union home minister and finance minister during the UPA rule from 2004 to 2014, was arrested by the CBI on August 21 from his Jor Bagh residence.
