A senior jail official from Assam was arrested on Thursday night following investigation into recovery of unauthorised electronic gadgets from the cells of Waris De Punjab chief Amritpal Singh and his associates lodged in the Dibrugarh Central Jail.

The Dibrugarh police revealed the arrest of superintendent of Dibrugarh central jail N. Das under sections of IPC, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Assam Prisons Act on Friday.

Das has been booked under IPC section 120B (criminal conspiracy), UAPA Section 13 (1) (b) (engaging in unlawful activities or abetting them) and Section 75 of the Assam Prison Act (introduction or removal of prohibited articles into or from prison and communicate on with inmates).

The recovery of unauthorised gadgets and the arrest of a jail official assume importance because the NSA block has been where separatist preacher Amritpal Singh and his associates have been lodged since March.

Waris De Punjab is a radical pro-Khalistan group.

Assam police chief GP Singh had in a post on X last month revealed a search of the jail premises led to recovery of electronic devices, including a smartphone, a keypad phone, a TV remote, a spycam pen, pen drives, headphones and speakers.

A probe was initiated to trace the source of the unauthorised items and how these got inside the jail.
